KEEP THE SPIRIT OF ’45 ALIVE held a press conference on Friday, August 14, 2009 in Chula Vista, California to officially mark the West Coast launch of its year-long initiative inviting men and women who remember August 14, 1945, to record and share their memories of the day World War II ended and the “Greatest Generation” took on the daunting task of rebuilding a shattered world.

Following a press conference in New York City’s Time’s Square featuring National Spokesperson Edith Shain (the original nurse from the iconic “V-J Day Kiss” photo), the West Coast press conference was held at the California Veteran Home in Chula Vista, CA, which will be the first of the more than 200 veterans homes in America to officially join the project.

The Chula Vista KEEP THE SPIRIT OF ’45 ALIVE effort is being led by Joan De Munbrun, a 96-year old WAC, and Cheryl Perez, the widow of a Vietnam veteran and life member of the Purple Heart Association.

The press conference featured remarks by US Representative Bob Filner, who officially proclaimed the day as “KEEP THE SPIRIT OF ’45 ALIVE” Day in his District. Representative Filner chairs the Veterans Affairs Committee of House of Representatives and has been a long time supporter of Stories of Service, the parent program of KEEP THE SPIRIT OF ’45 ALIVE
