Scouts Lead the Way on Veterans Day 2017 New York City More than 300 Scouts braved the cold to march up 5th Avenue in the New York City Veterans Day Parade carrying photos of WWII veterans, including Medal of Honor recipients who made the ultimate sacrifice and famous New Yorkers who were members of the "Greatest Generation." Girl Scouts and Brownies wearing red bandanas with white polka dots, honored the women who worked on the Home Front to support the troops, carried banners promoting National Rosie the Riveter Day and the campaign to create a new Rosie the Riveter Memorial in the form of a national network of rose gardens. They were joined by Mae Krier, 93, one of the original Rosie's who built bomber airplanes for Boeing during WWII, who walked at the head of the Spirit of '45 entry this year. Mae co-founded National Rosie the Riveter Day (observed during National Women's History Month on March 21). Seward Johnson's sculpture depicting the famous "Times Square Kiss" and Kiss re-enactors Theresa Werner and James Martin joined the Scouts to complete this year's Spirit of '45 Veterans Day entry.
The New York Veterans Day parade is organized by the United War Veterans Council, and is the largest in the country. Spirit of '45 "March of Heroes" entries are being formed in Veterans Day parades across the country in anticipation of the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII in 2020. Participants are encouraged to carry the photos of WWII veterans in their families and communities to in their local parades. San Diego Honor Flight joined the Girl Scouts organized a a Spirit of '45 entry in San Diego's Veterans Day Parade again with the support of their local Walgreens stores which donated photo posters and funds to buy caps with Spirit of '45 Day pins that the Scouts wore proudly through the day.  Albany, OR US Senator Ron Wyden honored WWII Air Power to Home Front with Congressional Excellence coins.
